Public Comment Period: Xcel's Colorado Gas Plan

From our friends at Colorado Renewable Energy Society:

Xcel Energy is proposing a Gas Infrastructure Plan for the next five years. Commission regulators will decide if the utility can keep relying on expanding fossil projects or be required to pivot towards clean energy solutions.

You can say something as simple as, “Please require Xcel to pursue replacing gas with electric.” You can use the points below, and of course, you can say whatever like. Thank you!

We believe it is past time to move beyond relying on gas for heating. Burning natural gas (which is 70%+ methane) causes indoor air pollution harmful to human health, and outdoor air pollution damaging to our climate.

A far better path forward relies on using electricity to heat homes and buildings. The electrical grid is rapidly growing cleaner, and studies show all-electric new homes cost less to operate than those reliant on gas.

Today’s high-performance air-source heat pumps are proven to work in cold climates like ours and provide efficient heating and cooling of both existing and new buildings with a fraction of the pollution caused by burning gas. Ground-coupled heat pumps are proving to be the cleanest and most cost-effective way to build heating systems for new developments.

Rather than encourage gas infrastructure for the next generation, CRES believes that it is time for state regulators to provide ways for Xcel to further encourage customers to move towards clean energy solutions for their homes and businesses.
